“Investigators determined that many of the deaths were caused from two chemical additives that were present in some of the food: melamine and cyanuric acid. When both melamine and cyanuric are present in pet food, they form dangerous crystals in the kidneys of the dogs and cats who ingest them.” Chinese pet food and dog treat producers were adding these two chemicals as “fake protein” to increase their profits.[2]

Illegal Antibiotics (“Tilmicosin, trimethoprim, enrofloxacin,”) and Illegal Antivirals (“Amantadine, Rimantadine, and Memantine”) were present in chicken and duck jerky.

The FDA states that antibiotics can be used to treat poultry, however, their meat becomes toxic and inedible. Use of antivirals are prohibited in poultry, which includes chicken, duck, and turkey.[3]

Micotoxins were also found in the Chinese pet products. Micotoxins are by-products of mold metabolism and is found in grains like “corn, wheat, rice and other grains.”
